One of the most extraordinary and least-understood aspects of Cretan culture, the vendetta — known locally as echthrótita (enmity) — was governed by a complex code of honour. Passed through generations in the mountain villages of Sfakia, Malevizi, and Monofatsi, blood feuds followed unwritten rules regarding revenge, protection, mediation, and reconciliation.
Children could inherit conflicts they never created. Entire families lived under the weight of past violence. Yet even the darkest feuds contained pathways to peace, often sealed through public reconciliation ceremonies witnessed by the community.

How long is the walk and how difficult is it?
Approximately 2.4 km over two hours, on mostly flat cobblestone streets. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The pace is slow — we stop often, and the stories take time.
